Type of fish aquariums for your home
Fish come in all shapes and sizes and fish aquariums do too. There are many aquariums available to buy online and in your local pet stores. These are attractive, entertaining additions to your home and give an insight into how fish live in their underwater world. The main types of aquariums include the following:
Fresh water aquariums
This type of aquarium contains fresh water fish, animals and plants. They’re generally easier to maintain than saltwater aquariums. Fresh water does not need to be changed and tested to the same degree as salt water. In most cases they also cost less than their salt water counterparts.
A range of fresh water tanks are available including cichlid, brackish, biotope and predator and planted tanks. Most of these aquariums don’t require lighting except planted aquariums. You can add various types of fresh water creatures as well as rocks, caves and plants to make these aquariums more entertaining and a better habitat for your fish.
Saltwater aquariums
Like fresh water models, there are different types of salt water aquariums available. The main categories include reef tanks, fish-only with live rock tanks (FOWLR) and fish only aquariums. These tanks need more expertise, are often more expensive than freshwater tanks and require more upkeep. They also require more equipment including hydrometers, protein skimmers, sumps, salt mixes, power heads, alkaline and calcium test kits. Lighting is more expensive to buy and run too.
When you’re changing water in saltwater aquariums, it’s not always as straightforward as it is for freshwater tanks. You have to mix the appropriate salt into the water. Once you do this, you then have to measure the waters salt content to make sure it’s correct.
Table top aquariums
You can locate these aquariums anywhere you have a flat surface in your home. Table top saltwater or freshwater aquariums are available to fit on tables or any other prominent areas of your home.
Wall mounted aquariums
Some aquariums can be built into walls. These stylish tanks are an eye catching feature in any home. Wall-mounted aquariums are available in a wide range of sizes and styles but you might need some help fitting them.
